Within eyeshot of the 5 freeway, just south of Camp Pendleton’s Front Gate, sits The California Welcome Center – Oceanside. What some may not realize looking at its clean, white exterior is that more than 80,000 people a year stop through this unassuming edifice. If you ask me, many more should do so. I will explain in short order!
You see, like the other 19 California Welcome Centers scattered throughout the state this location, which is likewise staffed by knowledgeable Travel Concierge’s is loaded with a wealth of maps and brochures to inspire your travels in and about the local area, in this case Oceanside and Greater San Diego County. These courteous and friendly volunteers are armed with the G-2 on where to eat, what to see, and where to stay in good ol’ O’side!
But even if you consider yourself a North County aficionado and feel that you know the lay of the land pretty well there is still one huge reason why you should stop in and see the fine folks at the Welcome Center – The Oceanside Deals Card.
The Oceanside Deals Card is a must have money-saver that not only takes care of the sales tax at several great restaurants but also scores you the same 10% discount on water craft rentals (such as powerboats, jet skis, and kayaks) and sky diving lessons as well!
One must try restaurant that accepts the Oceanside Deals Card is ‘That Boy Good’ Southern BBQ Joint, the brainchild of former sailor Chef Mark Millwood. He has brought his flair for Southern fare to sunny SoCal for all you homesick military types from the Deep and Dirty. Normally I would bother to comment on a place’s food if I were recommending them but with a name that classic you just have to try it! Plus you will be supporting a veteran owned business. One thing I will tell you is that they have icy cold Kool-Aid all day long! Get some!
